Dakar Rally Raider

Hobby project: Mack x Renault Hybrid

March 2024

I have been working with trucks now for the best part of seven years, four of those in the design department of Volvo Group where I worked with several brands including Mack, Volvo and Renault.
Since I was young the Paris-Dakar rally has always intrigued me, an endurance race across the breathtaking expanse of North Africa testing man and machine to the limit.

Renault have some of the coolest looking front ends of all the flat trucks and are also an iconic part of the race going back many decades to its inception. I really wanted to create my own homage to both the long nose American truck shape with something more European and brutish. While mostly inspired by the Renault K there are a lot of design nods to the Mack MD on the front.

Everything is built in Blender, but I have re-used or bought a few items including the winch, tire treads, racing seats and electric engines.

In order to challenge myself with rigging I opted to create three types of suspension, leaf spring, Ohlins dampers and air suspension. Not a realistic setup on either vehicle but this project is just for aesthetics and fun.

This is a fun project built in my spare time, not affiliated with work.

One of the most important and fun parts of any project is excessive moodboarding and research!

An older unused exploration with the Renault K. Some of these shapes and parts would make there way through.
